I know that many people want to learn more about their health and the health of their families but don't even know where to start! I know this feeling, because I was in the same position several years ago. I wanted to do the "right thing" for my family- feed them right, eat right myself, but I was confused with how to start! If you are new to this whole healthy living thing and want to learn more, here is a list of resources I find very useful. I will periodically come back and add more books to this list as I discover them!
If you are new to this world of healthy living, these Consumer Guides are the place to start! They give you rankings of typical supermarket foods based on health. They remind you which products are best bought organic and which cleaning products and beauty products should be avoided. These guides are free and they also have free apps to keep the info handy when you are out shopping!
Joel Furhman, Eat To Live
This is the book that began my own personal health transformation. I got through 150 pages and decided I am making a change. I don't know what about it spoke to me but 5 years later, I am healthier than I've ever been and have this book to thank!
Michael Greger, How Not to Die
I am a big advocate for a whole foods diet for the entire family and Dr. Greger positions that this approach is the best defense to many modern diseases.
Jennifer Tyler Lee, 52 New Foods Challenge
This book is so helpful for parents of young children! It gives you ideas for games and other fun ways to get kids working on trying new foods. I have used numerous techniques from this book over the years with my kids!
There is also a fantastic companion website: http://www.52newfoods.com
Pamela Compart MD , The Kid- Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook
Whether or not you have a child with ADHD or autism, I think all parents would benefit from learning the best and worst foods to promote healthy functioning in kids.
Karen Le Billon, Getting to YUM
This book guides parents in food training their kids, which is basically teaching parents how to introduce new foods and enriching a child’s palette. The real life techniques are very helpful for parents of finicky eaters.
Joanna Faber and Julie King, How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen
This book was eye opening for me in figuring out how to deal with typical kids issues in the most productive way possible. There is an entire section dedicated to dealing with picky eaters which is always a subject I get a lot of questions about. If you have kids 2 through 7, I highly recommend giving this a read!
Ariana Huffington, The Sleep Revolution
Theres a trendy meme on Instagram- "Sleep is the new sex. Everyone is talking about it, no one is getting it." I find that sleep eludes many of my clients and the practical advice this book suggests, makes it one of my favorite books to recommend to all of you out there playing on your iPhones at 3am!
Andy Puddicombe, The Headspace Guide
This handy book gave me a background on the Headspace creator, Andy Puddicombe''s personal foray into mediation and the fascinating read reminded me that meditation and mindfulness are a journey that is worth the effort! The Headspace App's fundamental 10 minute guided meditations are great and worth the free download.
Since I included the Amazon links to each book, I may get a small commission if you choose to buy these books. I am just as happy if you end up borrowing them from the library! Please don't hesitate to reach out with your own favorite links, sites and books!
