Do you know about the Paleo phenomenon- if you don't, its basically people attempting to eat like our cavemen forefathers. Sound strange and crazy? Maybe so, but there are many people who really thrive on a low- grain or no grain diet.
First, a note about my own personal diet- None of what I eat should really matter to you, dear readers. As a student of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the number 1 rule we learn as we study all the dietary theories out there is, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT - a diet that works perfectly for one person's body can make someone else sick! So, I don't preach for anyone to do what I do (currently a low grain, mostly gluten- free and vegan lol) but I do always recommend that my client's use their bodies to explore different ways of eating to see what works best.
Now that we got that out of the way, going grainless has many advantages to many folks- If this is something that interests you, check out William Davis' Wheat Belly for eye- opening information on grains. He cites numerous benefits from removing wheat including better mood, less anxiety, sharpening your concentrating and clarity of thinking and reversing numerous chronic diseases of the mind, including dementia. Who knew that what we eat could so severely impact our brains! After reading many many studies and books on the subject, I began limiting my own grains and have been feeling pretty amazing so kept going!
An easy way to begin limiting grains is by finding amazing grainless recipes of course! I will be posting some of my own, so keep following along the blog! Here is a great breakfast options that take the same amount of time as making oatmeal and tastes just as satisfying on a cold or rainy day!

Paleo Grain- Free Oatmeal
1/2 ripe banana, mashed
2 tbsp finely shredded unsweetened coconut, the finer the better
2 tbsp almond flour
1/3c (I used homemade but Califia Farms is my favorite store bought)
1-2 tbsp protein powder, optional (I use Nutrasumma Unflavored and Unsweetened)
Mix everything together and either microwave about 1 1/2 minutes or cook over the stove until thickened. Add another few tablespoons of almond milk, until you have reached your desired texture. Top with fruits, paleo granola and seeds. Enjoy!
